Difference Between Oxidation and Reduction

Oxidation and reduction always happen together in redox reactions. Remember the rule OIL RIG: Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain (of electrons).

In short

Oxidation is the loss of electrons (or gain of oxygen / loss of hydrogen); reduction is the gain of electrons (or loss of oxygen / gain of hydrogen).

Frequently Asked Questions - Oxidation vs Reduction

What is the easy way to remember oxidation and reduction?
Use OIL RIG: Oxidation Is Loss of electrons, Reduction Is Gain of electrons.
Can oxidation happen without reduction?
No. Oxidation and reduction always occur together - electrons lost by one species are gained by another, which is why they are called redox (reduction-oxidation) reactions.
